    The U.S. Department of Energy's conservative estimate is $900 million in annual dollar losses through copper wire theft from electric, telecommunications and other industries. The federal government has also placed protection of electric and telecommunications infrastructure as a national security priority due to the threat of cyber and physical attacks on the power grid.
